There is a mix up in the 1940 census. It shows his wife Alice age 14! They got the two Alices mixed up.
Where is Dorothy though. She would be 12 in 1940 and so I would expect her to be with family?

JOHN SEARS got Social Security number (indicating Massachusetts,) and died September 1970.
