Gurrane, Kerry

Timothy Horgan and Margaret Ash are one of my 8 pairs of great great grandparents.

They were married on 22 February 1857.

The witness to the marriage was DANIEL SULLIVAN and the priest was REV P MANGAN.
The event took place in Ballyferriter, Co Kerry.

Following their marriage they had 11 children

Mary 1857 http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I319&ged=Doggarts
Catherine 1859
John 1861
Johanna 1863 my great grandmother
Margaret 1865 http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I322&ged=Doggarts
Dermot 1867
Michael 1869 http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I321&ged=Doggarts
James 1871
Timothy 1874
Patrick 1877

44 years later the 1901 census shows my great great grandmother, Margaret was living with her youngest son, Patrick in Gurrane.

She was 60 and a widow. Patrick was 23. She couldn't read but spoke Irish and English. Patrick was single and a Blacksmith's Apprentice. He was able to read.

There were 7 inhabited houses in Gurrane. The census gives information about the houses as well as their occupants. The house that Margaret and Patrick were living in was a single house without any associated outbuildings. It was built of stone, brick or concrete and had a thatched or wooden roof. It had 2 rooms and 1 window at the front of the house. John Horgan, Patrick's eldest brother owned the land on which the house stood.

John Horgan (my great grandmothers brother) also lived in the village in the census year of 1901 with his wife Mary (Connor) and children.
Altogether they had 9 children

Hannah 1889 (Found she went to USA and married Timoleon S Vanvakerides)
John 1892
Michael 1893
Kate 1895
Mary 1895
Timothy 1897
James 1898
Margaret 1901
Ellie 1904

their house was built of stone, brick or concrete and had a thatched or wooden roof.
It had 2 rooms and 2 windows at the front of the house. It also had 3 associated out buildings.

Of the original 11 children John was the only other one still living in the village on the 1901 census apart from Margaret and Patrick.
Going through the others

Mary She died 1893 after marrying Patrick Callaghan http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I319&ged=Doggarts
Catherine She had moved to Ballyeightra and married Laurence Connor, a blacksmith in 1879 when she was 20.
John He married Mary Connor in 1888 when he was 27 and still lived in Gurrane.
Johanna (my great grandmother) She married my great grandad James Sayers in 1885 when she was 22. Living in Knockavrogeen.
Margaret Married Patrick Moriarty 1894 http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I322&ged=Doggarts
Dermot (Missing)
Michael He went to Springfield http://doggarts.name/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I321&ged=Doggarts
James (Missing)
Timothy (Missing)
Patrick Living with his mum in Gurrane aged 23. Apprentice blacksmith.

None of the missing ones were living in Gurrane. Where were they? I have searched surrounding areas but can't find them.

I checked ellisisland.org to look at emmigration records. There are lots of Horgans and some match on age and often come from Kerry but there
isn't enough information to be sure you have the right person.

I did find a burial record for a James Horgan in Cill Bhreac cemetary Gurrane, died 10 Apr 1984 age 84 which could be the James son of John Horgan. As there are no other details its a long shot. He was single according to record.
UPDATE 20Feb2015: Dont think so. I found James Horgan went to USA
Also a John Horgan died 24 Jan 1978 age 85. A farmer and widower. "Heart" given under cause of death. He could be another son of John Horgan. Another long shot.
Also in Kildrum cemetary a John Horgan aged 84 died 14 Dec 1943 a farmer, widower of Gurrane. Could be my John?

So what happened to Timothy Horgan and Margaret Ashe?

Margaret was a widow on the 1901 census so Timothy must have died between 1877 and 1901
I have found a death in 1875 but it's too early ?. I also searched for Tadhg the irish form of Timothy. So his death is a mystery.
Perhaps he went to America or England?
